Saturday May 6th, a Nike athlete has brought the world closer to making human history.
The 2 hour marathon. No human has been able to run a marathon in under 2 hours. A marathon consists of 26.2 miles, the fastest recorded time was Dennis Kimetto’s world mark of 2:02:57.
Eliud Kipchoge (pictured above), Olympic champion, partnered with Nike to break the 2 hour marathon. On May 6th at around 5:45 am Eliud and two other runners took off. Eliud ran the marathon in 2:00:25, going an average of 4:35.7 per mile. This means that he was able to beat the previous record by 2 ½ minutes. ‘The world is now just 25 seconds away from under two hours,’ said Eliud after his attempt. This marathon however, did not go down as an official record because it was done at Monza’s Formula One race course and drinks were brought to the runners. Kipchoge was able to break his previous record of 2:03:05, which he set in the London Marathon in 2016. Eliud Kipchoge didn’t run this marathon in any ordinary running shoe, he ran the marathon in the unreleased Nike Zoom Vaporfly Elite. Nike has even created a hashtag to support the hype around their sneaker and their overall mission of #Breaking2.
Eliud Kipchoge has brought Nike, and the world, closer to breaking the 2 hour marathon mark.
